Besides yoga, Deb holds a BS in therapeutic recreation from Virginia Commonwealth University. As part of that she completed 500 hours of internships at the Medical College of Virginia Brain Injury Rehab Unit, the ARC and University of Virginia Physical Rehab Department.
In 1993, she was part of the second graduating class at the Virginia School of Massage and in 1999 completed additional coursework when the program expanded to 500 hours. A year later, she completed an additional 100 hours of medical massage at the Baltimore School of Massage. Other longer bodywork trainings included 150 hours in acupressure from Acupressure Institute and the 240 hour foundation level training at International School of Shiatsu.
She completed the professional certification in aromatherapy from American College of Healthcare Sciences as well as an additional course in aromatherapy consulting. She studied clinical aromatherapy with Rhiannon Lewis in upstate New York and Mark Webb at HEAL center. She has also completed additional courses in hydrosols and botanical perfumery with New York Institute of Aromatic Studies and Alchemy of Menopause with Aromagnosis.
Deb is a fully certified Balanced Body Pilates mat and apparatus instructor completing her studies with Lesley Powell in New York City.
In the somatic movement field, she is an authorized teacher of the Sounder Sleep System and completed 2 rounds of the training with Michael Krugman. She completed teacher certification requirements in the Movement Intelligence programs in Bones for Life, Walk for Life, Bones for Life Chairs, and Movement Solutions. She has studied Ideokinesis and Activated Isolated Stretching with Irene Dowd, who is on faculty at the Juilliard School in New York.
Deborah has been practicing yoga since 1995 and teaching since 2004.
She initially studied Iyengar yoga with teachers while living near Charlottesville and Williamsburg, VA, and, after moving to New York in 1999, she continued to study in that style at the Iyengar Institute, Bedford Yoga, and Hudson Yoga with various teachers.
Over time, she began to explore other styles and became interested in vinyasa yoga's flowing movement, taking classes with teachers in the Integral Yoga tradition as well as at YogaWorks. She completed initial 200-hour certification in vinyasa yoga with Lisa Bennett and Charles Matkin, who were long-time instructors at ISHTA Yoga/Yoga Works.
After beginning to teach at New York Sports Clubs, she studied yoga anatomy and movement intensively with Leslie Kaminoff and Amy Mathews at The Breathing Project in New York and continued to learn breath-centered yoga, peri-natal yoga, and additional teaching techniques from other teachers at the same center, fulfulling the Yoga Alliance requirements for a 500-hour program.
After leaving the health club environment, which did not allow for teaching the full panoply of yoga practice, she focused more on community yoga classes and beginning work with individuals. She completed BodyMind Centering Embodied Developmental Movement and Yoga with Roxlyn Moret and Amy Mathews at The Breathing Project in 2008.
Her teaching has settled into a mindful, breath-centered flow yoga based on the teachings of T Krishnamacharya and TKV and Menaka Desikachar. She currently studies yoga practices with teachers in that lineage. In 2015, she completed a 500 hour training with Guta Hedewig at The Yoga School NY. She has completed workshops with Gary Kraftsow, AG and Indra Mohan, and Fran Ubertini. She is currently in the Yoga Well Institute's 1000 hour yoga therapy training and regularly studies meditation techniques and philosophy with Chase Bossart and is mentored by Mia Azcue (her primary teacher).
